How is the sludge at the bottom of the crude oil storage tank formed：

The sludge at the bottom of the crude oil storage tank is mainly due to the long-term use of the crude oil and oil products in the gum, asphaltene, high melting point wax and impurities (such as sand, heavy metal salts, soil, etc.) and water slowly settle and accumulate at the bottom of the tank. These usually form a thick, black, gelatinous layer of material called tank bottom sludge. This sludge is usually composed of grease residues, dirt, moisture, metal fragments, and other solid particles that form a hard or sticky sediment. 

Why should the sludge at the bottom of the storage tank be recovered and cleaned regularly：

The sludge at the bottom of the tank will occupy the storage space of the tank, affecting the storage and transportation of oil products. In addition, the organic and inorganic substances in the sludge may negatively affect the quality and stability of the oil product, increasing the oxidation and corrosion rate of the oil product. Therefore, it is very necessary to clean the sludge at the bottom of the storage tank regularly. At the same time, cleaning sludge can extend the service life of storage tanks, reduce corrosion and damage to equipment, and protect the environment and personnel health. 

Another important reason is equipment maintenance, storage tanks in operation for many years after the occurrence of paint, rust, natural weathering, leakage and other equipment failures, maintenance of these failures must be carried out in a safe environment, which requires the storage tank can not contain flammable gas or liquid, through the tank cleaning process will be the storage tank sludge recovery, clean tank space and tank outer wall, to meet the requirements of hot welding;

Petrochina stipulates that crude oil storage tanks must be cleaned once every 4-6 years, and crude oil storage tanks, wax oil storage tanks, heavy oil storage tanks, residual oil storage tanks, etc. must be cleaned by non-personnel tank operation mode.
